Aldi Special Offers – from 12th May

Mmmm.  There’s been a significant rate of inflation in the Aldi Super Six. Still great value, yes, but quite a jump up from the 49c offerings of two weeks’ ago. Now a tray of vine tomatoes, 2kg Golden Wonder potatoes, packet of courgettes, packet of carrots and parsnips and asparagus tips are all 89c.  I’m sure the supermarkets will blame international markets etc., for random fluctuations of offers but I think it’s simpler than this.

For example, Tesco’s 25% off six bottles of wine, which they regularly offer – you get used to the discount and toddle in a couple of weeks later expecting the same value, and by the time you discover the increase / lack of offer you’re at the counter looking like a rather miserly wino arguing about the price of the acres of wine around you.

Same goes for the Super Six, you’re so used to them being great value you’ve battled through the doors, laid claim to a cardboard box which will have to serve as a basket and queued for seventeen-odd hours to get to the one open till before you realise that the other supermarkets can probably match most of these offers.

Anyway, rant aside, other Aldi specials from today include the eat-only-irish-for-a-week friendly meats of Irish Half-Duck and Irish Pork Joints (stuffed / plain), each for €4.99.  If you’re not lambed out of it after Easter, from next Thursday there are Gigot Chops at €4.99, Carvery Shoulder at €12.99 and Leg Steaks at €4.99.

Also up that week are a whole host of Mexican food offerings, (no chipotle chillis tho, *sobs*) although word to the wise – I bought the €9.99 Fajita Sizzler (cast iron tray there to the right) and while it looked amazing the first night, the wooden holder peeled and cracked immediately and the cast iron went rusty and ruined soonafter.

Yes, I know I have to season and care for cast iron, but my Le Creuset cast iron steak griddle is still in perfect nick, despite getting far more regular use than is good for our arteries.  However, to be fair, that could be the difference of oh, say, €100. #yougetwhatyoupayfor
